Applying Makeup Tips

Regardless of the level of coverage you need, be sure to continue buffing as you apply your minerals.

Check Your Application to Make Sure It Looks Natural - Regardless of the level of coverage that you require, your skin should look completely natural. If it doesn’t, that means that you have applied too much product or that the application is uneven. Don’t be discouraged, it takes a little practice to expertly apply a new type of makeup that you are unfamiliar with. If you have over-applied the product, take a clean powder puff or tissue and blot your face to remove any excess. Then resume blending with your brush until you have the look that you desire.

Note that makeup can have the problematic effect of clogging your pores. Be sure to use a brand of makeup that will not clog pores. These types of makeup have been designed and marketed to teenagers with acne problems. Many times this type of makeup will come with complete instructions. We know that Parabens are in almost everything we eat and use on our skin and hair daily!

• Parabens prevent mold, bacterial and fungal contamination. Widespread types of parabens include: Methylparaben, which is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract or through the skin. More importantly  p-hydroxybenzoic acid is rapidly excreted without accumulation in the body, which is good news as it is the one paraben found in most products use daily. Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Butylparaben and Benzylparaben. Are used as well. I am not writing an article on parabens, the only reason I bring them up is if you have skin issues that are caused by parabens, then read the label of your cosmetics to see if they are listed.

• I would like to put my 2 cents in on the use of parabens. Although their function to prevent mold, bacterial and fungal contamination; think what might happen to the products that don’t have any parabens in them? Take mascara, my studies found that paraben free mascara was useless. As without parabens, it makes mascara flaky, and worse the overall texture were clumpy! Do you remember the 1% or less rules I told you in part one? Well, my research showed that mascara’s that had even the smallest amount of parabens like 1/10th of 1 percent and as low as 0.15 of 1 percent of parabens. Was amazingly great mascara in that they didn’t flake or clump and the ones that had a cream base stayed all day! Creating beautiful eyelashes, and they were as low as 0.15 of one percent containing parabens!!!

• There are some cosmetics that don’t ever need parabens. Take eyeliners and lip liners. If they contain natural plant parts and custom mineral blends. With the base formula of oils and natural waxes with ingredients like vitamin E (made from the soy plant) as well as Mica, Iron Oxides and Titanium Dioxide.

• Quality Mineral lipsticks also don’t need any parabens in them. My own lipstick research taught me that if a formulator uses quality ingredients. One can delete all dyes, fillers and lakes and only uses pure pigment for coloring. Ingredients like Castor Oil, Sesame Oil, Coconut Oil, Fractionated, Cocoa Oil, Candelilla Wax, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Cocoa butter, Mango butter, Shea butter and Vitamin E. The results are: lipstick that will never bleed and moistens your lips all-day. Then you add mica, Iron Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, and you have the perfect formula. Of course this lipstick is not cheap, however quality should never suffer ingredients and women should get what they pay for and rightfully so!!!
• Natural preservatives: such as rosemary extract, vitamin C and E, citric acid, green and white tea extract (antioxidant), grape, apricot or pomegranate seed extract (Antioxidants) Vitamin B17 in apricot seeds has been said to be Anticarcinogenic. Tea tree extract as an antibacterial to also prevent spoiling. If one uses natural preservatives (in especially liquids), there will be no need for parabens.
• Organic Cosmetics:  Found in some high-end mineral cosmetics, however I would like to let you know the true amount found sometimes is questionable in that do they really do anything? Here is where the rule of one percent or less may come in to play! While itâ??s stated that if a product has one percent or less it doesnâ??t have to be listed as an ingredient!

Some cosmetic companies may list organic names like the list above of natural plant parts, when in fact they could be as little as one 10th of a percent or much lower. Remember even with this small amount of organic additives one can claim their cosmetics have natural or organic ingredients. The reason then for using the word organic drives the price up about 30% more than the standard pure minerals.

• Here is some food for thought: during my research on organic extraction of plants I found out there could be as many as 200 chemicals in one plant. Now try to imagine processing only 3 or 4 chemicals that are pure enough to use as an additive. This means the overall process is time-consuming and time is money right? This is what lead me to believe that it would only stand to reason for one adding a specific additive that has a value may cost $35.00 for only a few grams or a mere 1/8 of an oz. How much product would a formulator add to a so called organic cosmetic. Of course then one might consider some additives may even cost more and after all profit is the results needed to stay in business.

Please realize that a plant has different parts, such as the steam that feeds the leaf and then there are the feeding veins to nourish the plant. During this natural process, insectâ??s fungus, mold and all of earthâ??s free radicals attack the plant life and often destroy or alter the plants (Anti-oxidants). Further some plants can only be grown and harvest at certain times of the year, for full benefits.

• Itâ??s in my option that organic research needs more investigation. However not by the FDA rather a private sector that is not basis and short handed. Perhaps organic matter that is pure belongs in our system through diet! Ingredient labels are important to read, as you now well know. 3 to 7 % of women can have an allergic reaction to certain organic plants and bi-products there of is why the FDA requires ingredient labels in the first place. The FDA has little control of ingredients with over 5000 listed in cosmetics! You can well bet some are rated at the 10 scales as being harmful as a rule these are laden chemical cosmetics.

• Micronized and Nanoparticles: This falls in to common sense the smaller a particle is the deeper it can penetrate your skin. This defeats mineral cosmetics, because your pores will clog. Mineral cosmetics shouldâ??t clog your pores thus leaving you with a light protective covering that has a light feeling on your face.

This is one more reason I only use loose mineral cosmetics on my models, clients as well as students!  Micronized and Nanoparticles are the result of minerals that our crushed or put in a blender. Most often used in preesed powders, because a chemical has to be added to press the powder. Yet most women like pressed powders because they are less missie than loose minerals. Perhap those of you who lean towards pressed powders should give them a second thought especaily knowing you most likely areâ??t getting what you pay for?

I give loose mineral cosmetics five stars for the simple reasons above and it appears fewer ingredients are needed and the best part is loose minerals will never require parabens or filers. While pressed minerals only get three stars because of additives most commonly used and micro as well as Nano particle size are not good for your pores.

Interviewer: What exactly can be done to reshape and enhance lips with permanent cosmetics?

Melany: There are methods to correct some inconsistencies that we encounter as Permanent Makeup Technicians. Of course, I always take into consideration what my clients would like to achieve with a permanent cosmetic lip procedure. So, I always ask my clients to bring their favorite lip liners and lipstick with them to the procedure so they can show me exactly what they would like as their final result.

Interviewer: I understand that your expertise in color is one of your most envied talents by other professionals and students. What tips do you have for color selection for permanent lips?

Melany: When it comes to permanent lip color, you must remember at all times that implanted color in the skin is a combination of the mostly cool/blue lip tone and the color of the pigment, when it all has exfoliated after a few days and healed in for a few weeks, to determine the final color.

Implanted color is always much more natural in appearance than any applied conventional lipstick. Permanently applied lip color also eliminates “bleeding”; where regular lipstick “spreads” into the small periorbital lines (whether deep or superficial) that we all have around our lip borders. Permanent lip color solves the problem of unexpected lipstick on front teeth (argh!) or smearing of lipstick color with dinner napkins. There will be no more lipstick on the “collar” of your loved one or anywhere else for that matter, when you have permanent lip color.

Interviewer: I’ve heard of the Whitney Center technique for lips, what is it?

Melany: With the Whitney Center’s technique for lips, technicians can make subtle changes in the permanent lip color that will present dramatic results. Thin upper and lower lips can be improved with the use of permanent lip color pigments to make the lip appear slightly fuller and more defined.

Using a slightly brighter color will give more retention and make lips appear fuller also. Remember, brighter color implanted under the skin will never appear too bright. Of course, a soft natural color can also have a very positive result for those who want definition and only a slight tint.

Interviewer: what about clients who want a new lip shape?

Melany: With permanent lip applications I can help enhance or improve the cupid bows (the peaks of the upper lip under each nostril). This area can either be too pointed, too flat, uneven, or just nonexistent. With the Whitney Center technique, I can create any shape that is appropriate for the your shape face and lower orbital area to improve your appearance.

When you want the look of fuller lips, permanent makeup applied correctly can give a more youthful expression to the entire face. For anyone that has ever been unhappy with “too large a lip”, a deeper color done well within the vermillion line (natural border of the mouth) can create a smaller lip appearance.
I will never apply color directly into the corners (commissures) of the mouth, as color in this area gives the appearance that you’ve eaten a big piece of chocolate cake and not wiped your mouth!

Interviewer: How long does the typical lip procedure take and is it painful? Also what type of lip procedures do you typically do?

Melany: Other than full lip procedures which take about 1 1/2 hours to complete and are virtually painless due to our doctor administered dental block, the other lip procedure can be as simple as adding lip liner or a lip shade-down.

To prevent a “ring around your lips” I will reshape, if necessary, the lip shape with a more natural lip liner color and then shade that color down into the lip for a softer look.This technique only works with the more natural and softer shades of lip pigments.

Interviewer: What about a stronger lip color to give the look like lipstick has been applied, is that possible?

Melany: If you desire a “lipstick look” or stronger constant color in your face, then a bit of Vaseline or clear lip gloss is all that is needed on top of full permanently applied lip color to make the color stand out and look as if you spent all that time lining and filling in your perfect lips.

Interviewer: As we all age, it is natural to get wrinkles around your mouth, how do you handle permanent lip applications in this special situation?

Melany: Fine lines around the lips are the hardest lips to do in permanent makeup but are also the most rewarding other than a cleft lip. The finished results can provide a significant improvement in your facial appearance. This is where my experience comes into play; from years of dealing with these complex permanent lip enhancements. It simply takes time and expertise to render wonderful results.

During World War Two women were wearing bright red lipstick, possibly to cheer themselves up during that period of fear and grief.   Many cosmetic manufacturers have noticed a recent increase in sales, in spite of the current recession, suggesting that perhaps women like to treat themselves with a small luxury such as a new lipstick rather than embark on a full blown shopping trip.

Finding the right shade of lipstick is crucial and once found you will notice how it will brighten and lighten your face.

It is important to mirror your natural look with the type of colour you choose for your lipstick.  If you have deep or dark colouring, you can wear deep dark reds.  If you have any warmth or auburn streaks in your dark hair, avoid shocking pinks and choose reds that have a hint of orange in them.

If you have light or pale colouring, a deep or dark lipstick will overpower your face.  Again if there is any hint of golden or yellow in your hair, opt for a coral or warm brown lipstick, but nothing too dark or heavy. 

If you have ash blonde, grey or white hair, pink lipsticks will be more complimentary.  A nice clear fuchsia or rose pink will be very flattering.

If you have light or dark blonde hair, pale skin and soft brown, green, blue or grey eyes, you will look best in soft shades of pink, brown or coral lipstick. 

Before you apply your newly purchased lipstick, make sure your lips are in good condition and not chapped and sore.  Apply some lip balm regularly and â??buffâ? your lips with a soft toothbrush and a small amount of moisturiser.

It is good practice to apply a lip base under your lipstick.  Lip base acts as a moisturiser and will also give extra â??sticking powerâ? to the lipstick.  Now apply a lip pencil in either a neutral shade or a close match to your lipstick.  Outline the lips and then fill in over the whole lip area.  This will stop lipstick â??bleedingâ? into the area around your lips and give another layer of colour.  Finally apply a coat of lipstick, preferably with a lip brush.  

There is a vast array of lipsticks available in many different colours and varying degrees of price.  It isnâ??t necessary to spend a lot of money but it is important to find the right colour for you.  Beware of artificial lighting in some shops as colours can be distorted.  It may be worth asking for a sample to take home so you can see the true colour before you buy.
